Freeh: Airplane attacks feared before
9/11

WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Former FBI Director Louis Freeh
told the Sept. 11 Commission that the threat of a terror attack
using airplanes as weapons was well known since before 2000.
The threat of attacks by crashing airplanes "was clearly known
and it was coordinated into special events planning," said Freeh,
who was the director of the FBI from 1993 to 2001.
Freeh, testifying before the commission Tuesday, said the threat
of an airplane being flown into a populated area was considered in
planning for the 2000 Olympic games and in planning for other large
events.
Freeh went on to say that the White House was protected by
air-defense systems, although the capital in general was not.
He said he was never aware of any plot to use commercial
airliners as missiles before Sept. 11, 2001.
