This is perfect time for 9/11 hearings
Apr. 9, 2004 12:00 AM
Chris Hanlon wrote that "the
9/11 commission's 'investigation' during a time of war is
repugnant and reprehensible" because "it plays right into the
hearts and minds of our enemies" (Letter, Monday).
I
think this is the perfect time for the hearings. We are
attempting to promote democracy in the Middle East and this
shows the world how democracy works. It proves that George
Bush is not a dictator or a king; that his administration can
be held accountable. Representatives of the people can
question a president without fear. The president has nothing
to hide if he acted honestly and responsibly.
The war
against terrorism is not a conventional war. It's possibly an
endless battle.
The Iraq war is over ("Mission
Accomplished"). We are now an occupying force, having already
liberated the Iraqi people. Americans questioned the
appropriateness of our military presence in Vietnam and we're
now questioning the appropriateness of our presence in
Iraq.
Because Americans are dying for this cause and
taxpayers are footing the expensive reconstruction bill, I
think we have the right to ask a few questions. Good decisions
welcome scrutiny.
These hearings are sending the right
message about democracy. If our enemies "gleefully observe the
proceedings," one has to ask why. - Patricia Becker,
