9/11 Commission Looks At WTC
Announcements
May 17, 2004
6:58 am US/Eastern (1010
WINS) (New York) -- Public address
announcements made in the south tower of the World Trade Center on
September Eleventh, 2001 urged occupants to remain in the building
until less than a minute before it was struck.
A tape
analysis shows that as late as 9:02 a.m., 16 minutes after the north
tower was hit, a male announcer could be heard telling tenants in
the south tower that the situation had occurred in Building
One.
Immediately after, the announcer changed course, telling
tenants, quote, "If the conditions warrant on your floor, you may
wish to start an orderly evacuation."
The announcements were
heard in the background of a phone message left by Sean Rooney, a
9-11 victim who worked on the south tower's 98th floor. Rooney
called his wife from his office at 9:02 a.m. on September Eleventh,
2001 to say that the building had been declared secure.
After
the evacuation announcement was made during Rooney's message, he
quickly ended his call.
The south tower was struck at 9:03
a.m.
